Experi-mental is the work of VFS Digital Design instructor Ron Serna.
Recently in class, the dd08 group studied how to use lighting for product commercials and such. Involved in this was bouncing lights off of white boards to diffuse and spread out the light. It is a technique that was excellently used in the film “One Hour Photo” to create an ethereal feel to the drug store.
In any case, a motion picture gaffer named Edward Cohen (known for work on Spiderman 2 and A Beautiful Mind), developed desk lamps based around the idea of bounce lighting.
“The two included reflectorsone in the shape of a boat sail and the other an oval, provide sufficient illumination for a desktop. The body is made from a zinc alloy metal and the device is powered by a 12-volt adapter.”
There’s a terrific online display of the “Top 100 Typefaces Of All Time” chosen by some very big names in design. The site discusses the evolution of each of the typefaces and why it was developed and its impact on the world of design. Here’s the problem for most of us: the site is in German (for now). The opportunity though, is to look at this well thought-out selection and interpret for yourself why some fonts have had an impact on our visually constructed worlds. When you take a look at the level of detail that goes into every glyph of a typeface (such as the one pictured at left from Gill Sans), you can’t help but admire the passion of these influencial typographers. On a more practical level though, it calls on us to consider why we choose specific typefaces for particular design applications. When you’ve spotted a typeface that speaks to you as a designer, grab your copy of “Thinking With Type” or just do a quick piece of web research and get informed about it. Most designers have a set of typefaces they like to work and they develop a deep understanding of them. Check out the site and post a comment here to help educate your fellow designers. Stake out your type turf!
China’s online population is set to outflank that of the United States within two years, according to new statistics. The China Internet Networks Information Centre (CNNIC) has said that there are now 137 million Chinese online, a 23.4% increase on over last year’s figure, and representing some 10.5% of the population. At this growth rate, China’s Net-using population will exceed that of the United States, currently 210 million, within 24 months, the agency predicted. Internet growth in China has consistently gone beyond projections, despite heavy censorship from the Chinese authorities.
Wow… look at thoose numbers - I wish I knew how to speak Chinese.
Check out one of the first hands on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. The software’s premier is February 19, and we can get a free 30-day trial download. Seems like good stuff!
Hi everyone,
Some of you probably already visit the ReelIdeasStudio Website with my last post. Right now the site is focus on the Sundance Film Festival that’s happening right now. And within the next few months it will change to the next event which will focus on the Cannes Film Festival.
And I am very excited that WE as Digital Design will be building the website for the Cannes event. This is going to be a great opportunity for us to expose to the world thru Adobe. There will be more details after I come back. See you guys next Week!
Hey there geekoids, here is a good site for Flash gadgets and source code.
In the ’source’ section he lists the various .fla files and .swf for each, so you can sample right there, then see how it’s done. In ‘astro’ there are some goodies that aren’t in ’source’.
http://www.phong.com/astro/source/
His home site: http://www.phong.com , also has tutorials in Photoshop and other programs, and previous work he’s done. A local lad, at age 24, residing on the Sunshine Coast.
Enjoy!
As confirmed by a customer service representative:
“Rogers is actively working with Apple to launch the iPhone in Canada as soon as possible and will be the exclusive provider of the iPhone in Canada.”
No word on pricing, phone plans nor service coverage, but still good news to hear! Perhaps sometime soon we (poor students) can go to a cell store and play around with one.
Recently google announced a patent search beta. If your into 3D modeling this site is a great source for finding extraordinary blueprints of weird devices! Check out how a 1916’s popcorn machine works.
