by Boca Ceravolo

Hey guys, I know I already posted some stuff about Typographics earlier this week but I had to share this with you…

Typographics was selected for the TypeCon2007, as a part of The Typophile Film Festival.

Here is a little bit about the festival:

Typophile Film Festival 4 will take place at the opening night of TypeCon in Seattle, August 1-5, 2007.

It is open to anything relevant to typography, design history, and/or type design. It can be educational, experimental, inspiring or humorous.

The first Typophile Film Festival debuted at TypeCon 2004 in San Francisco, and showcased fifteen short works of typography in motion from around the world, including films by Erik Spiekermann, H5, Motion Theory, Trollbäck + Company, Cheshire Dave, and others.

The festival will take place in Seattle Aug 1-5 so if any of you guys are in Seattle for the nest few days you should check it out. There’s going to be a lot of really cool stuff on typography there.

Cheers

vimeo in action

by Iván Cruz

Hi guys, there’s a website that I think it’s a good quick and dirty way to share videos online, because I don’t know about you guys, but I hate the YouTube interface.

The website I’m talking about is http://www.vimeo.com, the interface is all AJAX, correct me if I’m wrong, you can edit the information of the movies in real time by just clicking the text you wanna change. It’s really user friendly and the quality is really good. Another cool thing is that it stores the the original movie file that you uploaded, so it can be viewed as a quicktime, in my case, in a different window.

What I like the most is the interface, it’s clean and customizable, you can change the color of the navigation and choose whether or not you want to show the name of the movie, author and/or avatar.

Here’s the application in action, I resized it to the size of the blog’s margins, changed the color of the interface and hid my avatar.

This was my first After Effects project, thanks to Ron I was able to pull this off last year. Hope you liked it.

Post some work?!

by Bart Barlowski

I don’t know why but no one (except instructors and like 4-5 students) seem to be posting and commenting on this public school blog. The digital design program has so many assignments and why we get to see like 5% of the work produced by students? Over 40 students and a average 1 post a week? I would really enjoy if people would actually post stuff every week, or even day. Ask questions and make this a community space for exchanging knowledge and getting some criticism. For a start here is so of my work I did at VFS,

Term 1 final motion

Character animation

and here is a test animation that I did for ‘dreams’. If your not into motion… then post whatever you are good at! Coffee maker instructions?

VFS DD to the rescue!!!

by Tom Fedechko

Earlier in the week we posted a blog entry about the Vancouver Flash User Group hosting an evening with Paul Ortchanian. Partially due to VFS attendance the event exceeded expected attendance and outgrew it’s venue. After a certain amount of emailing between the organizer, Mark Busse (President of the local chapter of the GDC) and myself, we managed to save the day by moving the event to the Bearpit. Brett Forsyth, who was going to attend the event regardless has offered his services to interface Paul’s tech needs with the technology in the computers. Everyone looking to attend the event owes Mark a bit thanks for calling his friends at VFS, and to Brett for sticking around to make sure Paul gets to present for and meet his fans.

Enjoy the event and good luck to Vancouver Flash User group on future events.

Hey, everyone, don’t forget to go see Tom about tickets today…this will be a great event, and a good chance for you to meet lots of industry-types, too.

As many of you know, the documentary “Helvetica” will be screening in Vancouver on August 7th. This year is Helvetica’s 50th birthday, and the film looks at its enormous impact on visual culture, advertising and our everyday lives. The film’s premiere at south by southwest sold out and the film’s world tour has been a smash success. We can’t wait to see it here!

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session with director Gary Hustwit, Douglas Coupland and type designer Jim Rimmer.

Friday the 13th at noon is the deadline for students to purchase tickets through Tom’s office. Tickets for VFS students are only $5 (regular student price is $15), and you will be guaranteed a seat.

Screenings in many other cities sold out in advance, so don’t miss your chance.

Date: Tuesday August 7
Time: Screening begins at 7pm. Discussion and reception to follow.
Location: Empire Granville 7 Cinemas, Theatre #7

If you would like to find out more about the film, you can visit Gary Hustwit’s web site or his blog.
