IDEO on Knowledge Sharing

by Brad Ando

I was looking for the presentation for yesterday’s VanUE presentation from IDEO’s Gentry Underwood.  Best I could come up with was some notes on his talk (it is actually for his talk that he gave at Web 2.0 Expo NYC but it sounds close enough).

In case anyone else was interested or missed it:

15 Essential Firefox Addons

by Brad Ando

Development:

  • Firebug
Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page.
  • Live HTTP Headers
View HTTP headers of a page.
  • Web Developer
Adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools.
  • YSlow
YSlow analyzes web pages and tells you why they’re slow based on the rules for high performance web sites. YSlow is a Firefox add-on integrated with the popular Firebug web development tool.
  • Abduction
Capture an entire web page or part of a web page and save it as an image.

Design:

  • ColorZilla
Advanced Eyedropper, ColorPicker, Page Zoomer and other colorful goodies.
  • Pencil
Pencil is a Firefox add-on to do GUI prototyping and simple sketching.
  • MeasureIt
Draw out a ruler to get the pixel width and height of any elements on a webpage.

Browser Enhancements:

  • Adblock Plus
Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them.
  • dragdropupload
Drop files into attachment boxes instead of browse for them or type in the filename. Drop multiple files and fill all the entries.
  • Split Browser
This splits the content area of the browser window as you like.
  • DownThemAll
The first and only download manager/accelerator built inside Firefox!
  • Mouse Gestures Redox
Allows you to execute common commands (like page forward/backward, close tab, new tab) by mouse gestures drawn over the current webpage, without reaching for the toolbar or the keyboard.
  • Grab and Drag
Enables Adobe Acrobat-style grab and drag scrolling, Flick gestures, and Momentum scrolling.
  • Save Session
With Save Session, you can choose to save the current session and close Firefox for the next startup.
This works best if you USUALLY want to launch Firefox with your default homepages or blank page but SOMETIMES want to start with the previous session.

Printable Wireframe Graph Paper

by Brad Ando

Konigi Graph Paper

“This graph paper is made for visual designers, interaction designers, and information architects. You’ll find styles for wireframing user interfaces, story boarding interaction, and plotting values on a two by two grid. Plus you’ll get a basic grid for drafting sitemaps or anything else that might come up.

These pages are great for sketching, but also work well when producing high fidelity drawings. The title bar and grid lines are non-photo blue, so you can easily remove them when scanned. The thick black lines for boxes will show in scans and are 2px wide to match the weight of Pentel Sign Pens.”

Self promotion and learning.

by Jamie Peterson

092508 MelonFresh.tv self promotion and learning

Well I am not exactly sure what Nick is jealous of (I can’t even get ShadowBox working on my blog). But like Nick I (Jamie Peterson aka DD10Jamie) have been trying to revive a blog that got lost and died somewhere along the way. So far I have been writing about meatballs, new software and posting some of the work I have done that most people would never see unless it was posted on some small, biased blog. In an effort to motivate me to continue to post and to create something of a draw for people to visit I have been thinking of ways to add weekly or monthly features to my site. The first one that I have just unveiled is a series of tutorials ranging from Photoshop, Final Cut, After Effects and everything in between. The requirements for these tutorials are that the techniques or tricks I explain have to be something fun, interesting, new (not already available on the internet) and most importantly useful and practical.

This morning I am releasing the first tutorial, Melon-Chromatic, which will explain how to recreate the paint drip effect as seen in the new iPod Nano commercials. You can see a video of what you will be doing in the link below and if you visit my blog you can download the tutorial PDF and a completed project file. All you need to bring to the party is your own copy of After Effects. Sound good? Excellent. If you are a first or second term student don’t worry. I believe that I have written this in an easy enough way that you should be able to make something cool. And if you still don’t get it send me an email. If that doesn’t work, go ask Bun. If nothing else after you go through the tutorial you should have pretty thorough understanding of masks in After Effects.

Oh and I am going to ask for a favor. If you get a chance, please leave a comment or email me with your impressions, comments, complaints. Thanks. One last thing. Bookmark, delicious, twitter, facebook or whatever you do to remember dope websites please do that. Okay that’s it, really this time. Go make some cool stuff.

MobyGratis.com

by Jamie Peterson

It’s like 5 Alarm except from the guy who made that awesome video with Gwen Stefani. Okay maybe that video wasn’t that great but I happened upon this and thought that it might interest everyone. Instead of me trying to explain it all I will let Moby.

I just went through the request form for a song and it was really fast. I only had to give a discription of what the project is and of the scene it will be in. It is currently being reviewed but I will update saying how long the wait was.

Bruce Sterling on the future of interaction design. sweet.

by Vinson Van Haaff

Here is as lively talk about the future of interaction design from cyberpunk author/legend Bruce Sterling. It was the closing lecture at the ‘Innovationsforum Interaktionsdesign’ conference in Potsdam, Germany. He painted a weird and wonderful vision of the future filled with biometrics and wireless money transfers. Probably one of the best futurist rants I’ve heard in a long time. He shoots down talking computers (think Mr. Clippy) and runs through a piece of the large list of technologies that were assimilated by the cell phone. Check it out, you’ll feel like a better person at the end. I swear.

p.s. - The ‘Innovationsforum Interaktionsdesign’ was one of the most important conferences on interaction design in 2007. All presentations from the conference are available as videos on the conference site (note that many of the lectures are in German).

Sketch to Vector, The Easy Way

by Brett Forsyth

Paperium is a unique digital pen. The thing that makes this a bit different then most digital pens is that it can save your artwork as vectors. This will probably seem like a to good to be true device to those that cherish the pen and hate the tablet. A bit pricey at 229.00 EUR, especially since you need their special paper as well, but it’s still less then a big tablet.
