NEW REGIME

Beautiful new slab typeface from virus called Regime, with unusual and very interesting alternates. I call bullshit on the statement that they are releasing this for the change of presidency but I admit that it has great potential for graphics with political theme. no less than 16 weights. you can buy here.

In Defense of Food
Originally posted by Iván Cruz on January 21st, 2009

Starting last week I’ve been trying to set aside at least a half-hour to reading, It’s been great so far. The book I’ve been reading is called “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan. An eater’s manifesto as the author claims, that builds on historic events about food and food politics, terms such as Nutritionism are cited, an ideology that assumes that the nutritional value in food can only be determined by the nutrients find by food scientists and how this ideology has actually worked backwards, health-wise.
I’m not going to talk more about this book because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, even when the author pretty much gives you a recap of the book in the introduction.
Bear Lodge Room 311

My good buddy Tony came to me and asked for my graphic expertise to make a shirt design. He wanted a spoof of the Boston Bruins alternate jersey and for it to say bear lodge Room 311. A bunch of my friends are going up to Whistler and staying at Bear Lodge this weekend, they wanted to get shirts made because they are going to drink their faces off……and this way they can’t get lost….hahaha.

Update and facelift coming soon
Originally posted by Nicolas Alexander on January 20th, 2009

I decided to give a face lift to my website and do some changes on the blog to make everything more cohesive, more interesting to browse and prettier (hello Gotham!). The portfolio redesign should happen sometime in february or early march and the changes on the blog will be minimal but includes the removal of the “tunes” section.
Having said that, I decided to update the tunes one last time with my top 4 favorite songs of all time…yup my best songs EVA! Not really reflect the range of music I listen to but these are songs that I still find amazing every time I listen to them even after years and years.
Guns N’Roses - Estranged
already posted this one before I know, but it’s just so good. I guess wikipedia explains the epicness of this song better than I would
Megadeth - Blood of Heroes
These(this) guys never had the success he deserved and I blame bad branding. Seriously how do you expect to go mainstream with a name like Megadeth? If you like this song, look for the stuff they did between 1992 and 1999. Lots of people say it’s their worst era, I say they were just targeting the wrong demographic
Oasis - Stay young
this is better than anything on morning glory
Guns N’ Roses - Garden Of Eden
I know… two songs from the same band in the top 4 ?…two songs from the same album in the top 4 ? The Use your Illusions double is my favorite album of all time and I doubt it will change anytime soon. This song is just kick ass. I also wanted to post the video because it’s the coolest video of the 90’s . Couldn’t find a good quality youtube vid so I uploaded this…Hope I don’t get arrested

By the way, I decided to get rid of the tunes because It’s a pain to update and I prefer spending time posting design related stuff. Hope you enjoyed it and feel free to leave me any good music suggestion as a comment on any post on the blog. Stay tuned for updates on www.goodmorningstranger.com

This is a tutorial I did from Lee Brimelow. I wanted to start using the library and understanding the parameters and functions/methods of the papervision code. I chose to attach some of my graphic design work once again. It is interactive and will take you to a url of the image on the cube face. I want to do more papervision tutorials and see how further I can take my ideas.

This is an image galley I put together using JavaScript. I realized how powerful it is and also how simple it was to do compared to Actionscript3 and what I did for my final project at school. I am really starting to like JavaScript and seeing the power it has over AS3.

I have been learning JavaScript lately as it has really helped me with coding in Actionscript3. I bought the book “Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24hrs” and it has really got me excited about using the language. I found a plugin called expando.js and started playing around with its features, this is what I ended up creating.

I thought I blogged about this during the holidays when I made the discovery but it must have slipped out of my head for some reason…
If you haven’t seen the work of Like Minded Studios (more precisely Luca Ionescu). check out their site and be prepared to be astonished by type awesomeness.
p.s.:I don’t understand the reasoning behind the rollover state of the links and why they appeared to be grouped but if you get it please let me know what it’s about…

Titans Eve Identity Project
Originally posted by Rae Aberdeen on January 19th, 2009
As soon as I graduated from Digital Design at VFS I had some time and was able to get back into my own world and take control. I have always been very involved in the Vancouver metal scene doing graphic work for bands and making my posters for Brutal Entertainment. I have a really close friend Casey who had just started a new band called Titans Eve. Casey was talking to me about doing artwork for them and I told him I was more than happy to offer my design. I had originally talked to them in November about taking on the project, but with school wrapping up and portfolio development being a focus I told them I’d have to wait to start the project when I was out of school. I was really excited because I got to start my first serious project and work for musicians which is what I have always wanted to do and is my dream.
Titans Eve gave me the concept for their album and the idea behind their music. They wanted to reflect their music with the beauty of Lucifer and making Satan seem beautiful rather than the evil perceived way we think of him. I was excited to start this project because I wanted to approach it in a way I had not got to practice while I was at school. I wanted to illustrate the artwork and use my drawing skills and after effects with Photoshop and layering. I sketched out many ideas and they led to this final design. I wanted to make Satan look beautiful and peaceful as he fell out of heaven and towards Hell. I will show you my process and how I came to the final design.

This is the first part of the puzzle. I had scanned in the my sketches and I used Illustrator to live trace my drawing giving me an outline to work with. I was now ready to do post work with Photoshop and add textures and color to bring this alive and resulted like this:

Now that I had the main idea down and ready to work from I started to create their identity using 2 logos. Their main logo I wanted to make very easy to read but unique and “metal” at the same time. I went through a lot of ideas and concepts but ended up producing this design. They wanted it to have a metal texture and look mechanized and worn.

I also was to design a secondary logo for them as well, a crest if you will. I liked the star shaped “EVE” I incorporated into the logo and took the letter “T” and mixed it into the “EVE”. I kept the texture and color consistent with the logo and this is what I came up with:

I came up with this final design of the concept. It shows Lucifer falling from heaven towards hell. He was made to look beautiful and elegant instead of evil and twisted. The way people perceive Satan is not how Titans Eve wanted to show him , they wanted him to look pleasant and show a side of him everyone looks past. My job was to bring their idea to life and I made them happy with the final outcome. I decided to invert the final render upside down showing him fall from bottom to top rather than top to bottom. The rays of light are coming from the bottom of the page which represents heaven and the black lines from his clothing are reaching out and attacking the light as he makes his way towards hell. He has a sinister smile on his face and he is pointing towards his new home. The main reason behind the inversion of his fall is to suggest that heaven may not be bad or wrong and that it may indeed be a good place opposed to heaven being a sacred haven. Maybe hell is heaven and heaven is hell? No one will ever know but Titans Eve wanted to portray this in their music and bring their interpretation to the world.

Titans Eve also had me do their entire myspace layout and direct a photoshoot with them. Please go to their myspace and take a look at all the artwork I did for them and enjoy their music. They are great friends and awesome thrash metal musicians.
