Facebook goes open source

A really inspiring read, about a site which we’re all addicted to. Talk about open source….

DD09? Already?

by Aaron Bell

Wow, has it really already been 4 months since we DD08 folk got here? And the DD06 guys (and gals!) are leaving already? Craziness.

In any case, I wanted to welcome the new class of DD09, all 24 (!) of you. As I’m sure Sebastien stated, the road ahead of you won’t be an easy one:

Ugg

but it is a rewarding one:

Yay

In any case, all of the rest of us folk in DD08 and DD07 (especially us lonely DD08s in Mario!) know what you’re going through and are quite willing to help out, so feel free to stop by! We can give advice on everything from places to go to get coffee or food around school to taking a look at your projects.

So, I’m sure you’re heard it too many times, but welcome to VFS and good luck!

Some useful notes

by Aaron Bell

Struggling with Flash a little bit, I discovered these references for inside text fields that help to style how it will look. They were indispensable for doing what I wanted to do, so I thought I’d share!

\n - Newline Character. Causes a line break
\r - Carriage Return Character. Also Causes a line break.
\’ - Single Quote Character
\” - Double Quote Character
\\ - “\” its self (prevents it being read as an escape character)
\u - Indicates a Unicode character…for other languages and wierd things you are still trying to find on the keyboard…like these: http://www.unicode.org/charts/

Drawing Club

by Jessica Clark

http://www.thedrawingclub.com/blog/

Howdy ya’ll. This link is a club in (I believe) Edmonton where a small group of artists pitch in to hire an actor to pose in costume for 3 hours. Produces some really neat work. Life drawing is all fine and dandy, but this allows students to study clothing and specific “acting” moments as well. Possibly something students here might like to organize given our proximity to the acting department.

maps.google.com

by Bart Barlowski

Google recently added the feature of “my maps”. Great idea, I really wanted to be able to customize my map.

Check this out: Click directions, type New York and London.  Step 23.

Met Home

by Stefan Belavy

Hey All

DD06 had a pretty cool class this term 6 - Online Branding. We chose a local business, then created an online editorial spot for them. I had Met Home - which is pretty much a dream store for me. Glad I had a chance to do some experimental stuff, one last time before grad.

Daft Punk’s Electroma

by Stefan Belavy

All this work with Cannes, reminded me of this. I had to share this for all the film buffs out there…it might be Zabriskie Point, for a digital generation. Some really stunning visuals, and the torrent is out there, for those more inclined…
