Directors Chair Contest “Mustache Vigilante”

by Nicolas Alexander

Hey Everyone, ( Justin Kohse here, thanks to nick for letting me post under his account)

I entered a contest a little while back called “the directors chair contest”. You basically make a 15 second commercial and show your scene movie card in some way, shape, or form. A friend and myself came up with a character known as the “Mustache Vigilante” aka: Detective Frank Cleamon. The contest works by views and votes and we could really use your help!

VOTE FOR US NOW!

we had a ton of footage, way more the 15 seconds worth, so we compiled it into a longer “uncut” version, but with no scene card. Just some old fasioned crime fighting with a mustache.

thanks again everyone and congratulations to DD11, cant wait to see some more finals.

“Monday” @ 2008 Haydenfilms Festival

by Danny Chan

“Monday”, a motion piece by Jadyn Aguilar (DD09), has been selected to participate in the 2008 Haydenfilms Online Film Festival. It is one of two films representing Canada from a total of 63 short films chosen from around the world.  The festival is running through February 10, 2009.

http://www.haydenfilms.com/Festivals/Fest2008/film/46

Note the $1000 cash prize just for voting.

“It is now the time to have your family and friends come support your film and be part of Haydenfilms online community. We are awarding a Viewer Appreciation Award of $1,000 cash prize to a Haydenfilms.com member selected at random who casts his or her vote for at least 10 of our finalists. The voting rule is as followed:

The Haydenfilms online community will vote on the films to decide the final four.  Our interactive voting mechanism has been designed to eliminate all bias votes, which means this is not a popularity contest.  Each member must vote on a minimum of ten films in order for their votes to count.”

“I had the great privilege to present a technology that “may or may not be part of any Adobe solution in the future” at Adobe MAX 2008 in Milan. This specific project is called “Infinite Images” and is being worked on by Shai Avidan; yes, the one that brought us Seam Carving (better known as Content Aware Scaling) in Adobe Photoshop CS4.”

Magic Hour photography

by Danny Chan

My favourite time to shoot photos is either an hour before sunrise or sunset. This period is often referred to as golden hour or magic hour. The light is more dramatic at these times, and yes, magical. Try not to set your camera to automatic white balance (use daylight instead) during magic hour as this will remove some of the warmth in your photos. If you shoot RAW, you can make adjustments after.

Webcam Gesture-controlled CoverFlow

by Brad Ando

“FluidTunes is an app that lets you control iTunes from a webcam. The main screen looks like CoverFlow, with the image from your camera image lightly visible behind it. You can swipe across the album covers to navigate, or swipe the large forward and back buttons for finer control.”

IDEO on Knowledge Sharing

by Brad Ando

I was looking for the presentation for yesterday’s VanUE presentation from IDEO’s Gentry Underwood.  Best I could come up with was some notes on his talk (it is actually for his talk that he gave at Web 2.0 Expo NYC but it sounds close enough).

In case anyone else was interested or missed it:

Printable Wireframe Graph Paper

by Brad Ando

Konigi Graph Paper

“This graph paper is made for visual designers, interaction designers, and information architects. You’ll find styles for wireframing user interfaces, story boarding interaction, and plotting values on a two by two grid. Plus you’ll get a basic grid for drafting sitemaps or anything else that might come up.

These pages are great for sketching, but also work well when producing high fidelity drawings. The title bar and grid lines are non-photo blue, so you can easily remove them when scanned. The thick black lines for boxes will show in scans and are 2px wide to match the weight of Pentel Sign Pens.”

Bridging Worlds - a Visionary Art Exhibit

by Simon Haiduk

 picture-3.png

First a little background;  My name is Simon Haiduk, I graduated in Aug. 2007 with DD07. Before DD, I was heavily into painting, and when I came to VFS I wanted to expand my skills with digital tools to further the visions into motion, while also learning some other fun stuff. Since I graduate I haven’t done much motion graphics, but went back to painting, and getting more into digital painting with Corel Painter X.. sooo fun! anyone who has a Wacom should get Painter.

However…the image above is a link to an draft version of a motion project I’m working on for a documentary on Quigong ( sort of like Tai Chi ). I feel a little rough around the edges with the motion, so I’m open to critiques. Keep in mind this is still a ‘draft’.. you’ll notice audio missing on the front end. I’m excited about this project because they’ve hired me to do all of the animation for this short film, and another full feature they are doing next year. It’s all in the same vein of art that I do which focuses on spiritual energy systems. So I’m mentioning to you students so you know that holding out until you get ‘the right’ job to maintain your artistic integrity is possible.

I also wanted to invite you all to my art show opening on this Saturday, Oct. 4th. It’s from 8pm - 2am at The Fall, 644 Seymour St. just around the corner from VFS. I know how intense school is, so I encourage you to come out and take a break, enjoys some, art, live music, drinks, and edibles by Gorilla Food.

Showing  art will be David Heskin, from Seattle, and myself. You can read more on my Blog if you’re interested. And below is a clip of Don Alder who will be performing at the show. Along with Gypsie Et La Fleur.

I hope to see you there.
