“The Bloom device is meant to be a subversive and inspirational tool for our concrete jungles. Similar to the tuft of a dandelion as the wind carries the seedling, we propose a way of dispersing seedlings with bubbles and bicycling.”
It’s like 5 Alarm except from the guy who made that awesome video with Gwen Stefani. Okay maybe that video wasn’t that great but I happened upon this and thought that it might interest everyone. Instead of me trying to explain it all I will let Moby.
I just went through the request form for a song and it was really fast. I only had to give a discription of what the project is and of the scene it will be in. It is currently being reviewed but I will update saying how long the wait was.
For the second consecutive year that VFS has been eligible, a Digital Design project has won another Salazar Student Award. Duelity, a motion piece by Boca and Ryan Uhrich (DD07), captured the award for the Interactive/Motion Design category. A Brief Guide about Bridesmaids, by Yaniv Fridman, Amber Mackay, and Nicolas A. Girard (DD10), received a Honourable Mention. It was noted that it was a very tight decision between the two projects. The highlight of the night was a presentation by Stefan Sagmeister.
Just so you know, I just found out that there’s gonna be door tickets for the Salazar Awards, Sagmeister being the guest speaker. The tickets sold out in like three days but they kept some, my guess, to see how designers will fight for the last ticket.
So if you want to attend the event, grab a blanket and go to the Roundhouse earlier than everybody else who has a ticket!
I know this is rushed but I just saw this and I thought it might be interesting for some of you, There’s going to be a Portfolio Review event tomorrow at TAXI, apparently it’s quite the event where you present your work to at least three creative directors from Vancouver, in a speed-dating kinda setup.
A quick walk thru on developing the Finish Line Shoes brand commercial you might have seen. Project involve camera tracking in 3D, then using 3D data to bring into After Effects for animation.
One of the commonly asked question in my Pixel Art class is where do you see/use pixel art within our fields. They mainly appear in the Gaming industry where handheld device always needed. Also a lot of icons, buttons, or even the entire websites /applications interface are done using pixel arts.
And of course now that pixel art is becoming an art form where people used it as a design solutions. And here’s an example of it.
Where are they? So many people in that class and I think I saw only one of them - Pablo’s final project (amazing work btw, cool concept and some crazy actionscripting there). Where are all the motion productions from dd09? Don’t be shy now and post… !
Here is as lively talk about the future of interaction design from cyberpunk author/legend Bruce Sterling. It was the closing lecture at the ‘Innovationsforum Interaktionsdesign’ conference in Potsdam, Germany. He painted a weird and wonderful vision of the future filled with biometrics and wireless money transfers. Probably one of the best futurist rants I’ve heard in a long time. He shoots down talking computers (think Mr. Clippy) and runs through a piece of the large list of technologies that were assimilated by the cell phone. Check it out, you’ll feel like a better person at the end. I swear.
p.s. - The ‘Innovationsforum Interaktionsdesign’ was one of the most important conferences on interaction design in 2007. All presentations from the conference are available as videos on the conference site (note that many of the lectures are in German).
I wanted to give all current students and alumni a heads up about some Papervision 3D 2.0training coming to Vancouver on May 3rd and 4th. It is presented by the Rich Media Institute and you will be trained by Papervision 3D core team member John Grden. If you are interested in the course let me know because if enough people are going to go I can get you a group rate.

I think you should know why you all saw Danny almost every night at school for the past couple weeks, well, Danny was working non-stop on three videos for the GRAPHEX 2008 Gala.
The videos have been really well received by professionals and students alike, check them out here:
Paperium is a unique digital pen. The thing that makes this a bit different then most digital pens is that it can save your artwork as vectors. This will probably seem like a to good to be true device to those that cherish the pen and hate the tablet. A bit pricey at 229.00 EUR, especially since you need their special paper as well, but it’s still less then a big tablet.
AKQA is hosting an event at Cannes…it’s a great way to get noticed in the Advertising/Interactive community. Big prizes,
big recognition. And, it’s free. A great way to network and jumpstart your career.
Hello and Happy Easter Monday. I have been sitting on a couple interesting websites for a while and finally decided to share them.
“CommandShift3 is like Hot or Not. Except, instead of clicking on hot babes, you click on hot websites.” That pretty much sums it up. If you are not familiar with Hot or Not it was a site that let you play this beautiful game where you were presented with a random picture that someone uploaded of themselves and then like a Roman emperor you could give the thumbs up or thumbs down. Which would either crush their self esteem by lowering their “Hot Rating” or raise it up and boost their low self image temporarily. If I remember correctly the kind people over at FOX also created a short lived reality show based on the concept. But anyways if you are thinking of going into interactive/web development, CommandShift3 is a good diversion if you have time for it.
RedesignMe! is a good site to visit if you want a little inspiration on how everyday things can be improved. The idea behind this site is that people will post items that they believe need to be redesigned and improved and then the community will post suggestions. It really is interesting to see the wide range of ideas that people come up with and a lot of times the most simple ideas are the most effective solutions.
Kuler (pronounced /ˈkʌlər/Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation“kuhl-er“, not cooler) and COLOURlovers are my favorite and most useful color resources on the web. Both are basically the same idea of premade swatch libraries with ridiculous names. I always get a laugh out of some the names that I come across. For example I just went to both of the sites and these are real names of sets: “walnut stain”, “Turn up the AC”, “Country Giblets” and “Team Zissou”. Also I highly recommend getting out the color wheel and whenever you find yourself at a hardware store to just grab a bunch of those paint sample chips they give for free.
And finally a funny one. Design Police offers a number of print offs to “bring bad design to justice!” I hope that I won’t have to post any of these on any of your work.
Thats it. If you guys like these I could add some more to this post later. Thanks for your time.
